EA still seems reluctant to show uninterrupted footage of Need for Speed Unbound, but at least this gameplay trailer has a good chunk of actual racing in it. From the clip, we get to see the setup that will precede each race, as you have to buy-in to each event and bet against rivals – and then we see the core, arcade action.
In truth, we’re not sure this is the best showcase; with the soundtrack cranked down it all feels a bit flat, although the daytime track does look a little more intense, as the player is shown leaping to an overhead railway track and narrowly edging past an oncoming train. Some of the visual details, like the graffiti-inspired wings, are sure to prove divisive – but remember, they can be removed.
Even if it’s not the best trailer, this is still the most interesting a Need for Speed game has looked for several years. Still, with the release little more than a week away, we’re eager to hop into the cockpit and test drive it for ourselves at this stage.

Looks like a racing game. I am glad they turned off most of the soundtrack as I am sure the entire race had natural-sounding street lingo dialogue, hell-bent on emasculating me. Some would say that it was done to avoid spoilers. I say it's because these racing game scripts sound like they are just run through a Tik Tok voice filter so it sounds like a different character.
Example: Hello fellow racer, your racing sucks big time, you are so bad at racing that it also puts your mother's intelligence into question. My racing is so good compared to yours I would be willing to give you my car if you win. Oh no! Local law enforcement has caught wind of our obviously illegal activities, the police are such killjoys, let's ensure they can never bother us again. EXPLOSION!!!!
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
Canceled my preorder. It doesent match my expectations of a full price Release. Will buy it used after 2 weeks.
I was hoping for Criterion to bring back some of the magic from their previous Need for Speed games. This trailer just makes me feel old 😄 I guess I can always go back to the excellent Hot Pursuit remaster.
big "how do you do, fellow kids?" energy in this game. truly confusing. not sure what era they think they're in but this whole aesthetic is really not it.
good for them for trying something new, but wow, does this feel insanely out of touch or what?
I actually think it looks solid.
Not knocking anybody who gets it right away, but I will be waiting until it goes on a nice sale regardless if it is really good or not. Too many other games for the next several months, but I do hope it turns out to be good. It's been too long since there's been a really good Need for Speed game.
I think it looks pretty fun. And I say that as a racing game snob. I’ll still wait for the review but cautiously hopeful here.
I hoped this had a NFS Underground feeling, but it is too cartoony for me with the effects.
@KAIRU Really? That actually has me more interested.
@KAIRU well imagine you put them off and drive online with all the Kids who left them on? There you go haha
Has anyone heard about the MTX in this or they're just not going to be any? The last NFS was riddled with it.
@KAIRU thanks, that's good to hear. Hope the rest of the game is a little like underground. I didn't like the games after them as much.
@pharos_haven Nah no Motocross bikes just fast cars man.......
😉
Just give us a Burnout game Criterion! 😭
They better hope the gameplay has enough going for it because I think the aesthetics, music and overall vibe are going to be highly divisive, unfortunately.
@KAIRU who knows lol.
This will end up 6/10 and by Christmas it will be 19.99. Hold off buying this
I think i'll go back to onrush..
Really hope this game hits a home run.
My PS5 needs a new very good arcade racer.
Guess we will found out very soon.
If it misses the mark, it will be such a shame and very bad on the developers and EA.
It’s new generation only as well, there is literally no excuse to mess this game up.
Is it me or does it seem the person playing has never played a racing game before? That was painful to watch.
I'm sure it'll sell as well as any NFS game, but not for me. Also, I'm not this gen ready. Still racing last gen, previous gen and old gen.
It looks alright to me. I think it has potential to be the best NFS in years. Although I still wouldn't mind remake of underground 2 or 2005 most wanted. Even the enchanted versions would do it for me. Unbound sure looks like a solid arcade racer so far.
Damn, this actually looks worse than I was expecting and after the little clips, targeted demographic design, and bland visuals hidden in short clips had already significantly lowered my hopes on this one.
This looks like a late PS3 game with some reflections on the cars, and scribbles on the screen trying to hide that. However, all that aside the actually racing looks just bland.
I was hoping that the core racing would prove the highlight to save it, but absolutely have zero expectations for greatness on this one.
Time will tell. However, I am in full agreement on the fact that regardless of all things considered, this was a terrible showcase of extended gameplay, and coupled with the short, stylized nonsense clips we have seen prior; I feel like all involved know they have a dud here and are just looking to cash in on that target demographic that buy games that fit into their adopted artificial lifestyle identity.
@Dezzy70 Why is there literally no excuse to mess it up just because it's current gen only? Although you pretty much covered the reason why it will in your previous sentence, EA.
Minimal footage released and it's launching in a week? No alarm bells there then.
@shamirqushairi
YES YES AND YES
Would've expected something more from a 'next gen' only need for speed especially when their charging 70 for it looks like they just took heat & added some cartoon effects lol
@KundaliniRising333 the most boomer take i ever read
@KAIRU never heard of juiced 2 before , i looked it up and it looks dope , can’t believe i never heard of it before . was it a niche game or knock off compared to NFS and midnight club ?
@Jeanhenry
Because they had the time and being current generation there is not the old consoles for development to consider. Thought it would help the situation development wise.
I hope we can turn it off this anime selfshadding whatever crap effects. I really hope!
@Dezzy70 I get your points but don't think it can guarantee a good game, especially judging on what's been shown so far. If you strip out the Crayola art style (which you obviously can) it doesn't come across as anything special. Also find it ironic that with all the loot box/gambling mechanisms EA have been getting stick for they've made gambling a big focus.
@Jeanhenry
Well not long to wait now.
Maybe it’s my wishful thinking as I fancy a very good new arcade racer.
@Dezzy70 Wishful is good and a decent arcade racer would be nice. I'm usually towards the more serious end and enjoying the latest F1 game but some sideways action does break it up nicely. City looks good and the sounds sound good though so hope bit more to the gameplay to keep it interesting. Although half price in a January sale always helps to overlook some drawbacks.
